Completely free Mac software discoveries.
A quick run down of some new and completely free software I’ve been trying out on my Mac in the last few weeks…
- The logo is a little unfortunate but rootMachine looks like a neat little application. It runs the cron scheduler, repairs disk permissions, clears system caches and a whole load of other things to keep your Tiger/Panther purring contentedly. It is not as overwhelming in options as Cocktail is, and maybe isn’t as comprehensive but it is free. The only reason why I don’t use rootMachine is because I am a huge fan of Cronnix — it does one thing (manage cron jobs) and does it well. No more, no less.
- The quest for an alternative to iTunes is a never ending journey for me. I’m currently using the now-defunct MacAmp Lite but I discovered the promising (though severely under-developed) Cog. Admittedly, Cog is still under really heavy development but even now, it can play Ogg Vorbis and FLAC, and of course, MP3 files.
- If for whatever reason, you refuse to use the very pretty Adium or even Fire and don’t want to use the official client but still need to connect to the Messenger network, then you could try out the open source, classic-compatible and simple looking Mac Messenger.
- Damage Isolation converts software in Apple’s .dmg format to the PC friendly .iso format. It’s just one of those handy tools to have around when things start failing…
- Aronnax’s Firefox Theme is exactly what I have been looking for to adorn my Firefox with.

this was published on 23 June in the year 2005, which was a Thursday. anyway, all this is old and archived. everything has been now been moved, so head on down to the revamped almost daily random notes (unless of course you like this old stuff too much to part with it).
