Welcome to random notes, a semi-regular, almost-daily and completely platitudinous collection of text, pixels, links and other finds from the web

Nothing malicious — just ‘haha’ funny. Just press the “Esc” key to get out.

That was great, wasn’t it?

Cover art of Aril Brikha's 2007 album, Ex Machina

Iranian born Swedish producer Aril Brikha’s Ex Machina is filled with groovy beats, fat basslines, trippy strings and ambient soundscapes. Pleasant all-round and never jarring, this is a good album, which is especially enjoyable when you are just spacing out at home on a Friday evening. It’s a pity that, given the high standard of music, the album cover art is a little unremarkable.

Adobe Flash Player icon
Flash is bad. Every Flash player software that was ever released, up to the current version 9.0.124.0, is affected.

You could uninstall it but you won’t be able to see any of the cool shit that is linked at the FWA. Actually, you wouldn’t be able to see the FWA site itself!

Quantum mechanics is a fascinating subject, but this was exactly the kind of drab, boring videos that were shown in class that would put you to sleep in an atomic instant. This video is highly recommended viewing if you have trouble sleeping.

  • Unplug your devices when they are not in use.
  • Find and switch off the other “off” switch (like the ones at the back your computer).
  • Plug your devices into a power strip and switch off/unplug the power strip when not in use.
  • Better still, try using a smart strip.
  • Remove your chargers from the socket when you are done charging.

The difference between the fastest and slowest car is perhaps three or even four seconds per lap. So the fastest driver in the slowest car would still be nowhere, whereas the slowest driver in the fastest car would be quite successful.

Cover art of Leave Them All Behind, Vol. 2

The Modular People have pulled off yet another excellent mix disc with Leave Them All Behind, Vol. 2. This pretty good follow up to the 2006 compilation Leave Them All Behind was mixed by the Aussie lads, The Bang Gang Deejays and they’ve done a pretty good job weaving and blending music from artists like The Gossip, Mystery Jets, Klaxons (but of course), Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Presets, Peter Bjorn and John and even Wolfmother.

Justine Henin in action at last year’s French Open
She’s announced her retirement from the game while still ranked at number 1. Quitting while on top is a great idea, Justine… but please stay retired and don’t make a comeback and humiliate yourself in your later years, ok?

Teeth (2007) stars Jess Weixler and is written and directed by Mitchell Lichtenstein
Teeth is a movie about a teenage girl who realises she has a carnivorous vagina. So tell me, how do you not watch a movie with a premise like that?

A true B-movie, it’s absolutely cringe-worthy and funny at the same time. It is a comic horror movie, if you like. Just a word of warning for guys: although the movie is about a girl who bites off the heads of (not very pleasant) men, it still may be a little queasy to watch.

Cover art of The Kook’s 2008 album, Konk

Nobody seems to like The Kooks: the critics like to tear into them and one of their contemporaries said The Kooks make “music for girls”.

But don’t let all that distract you. The new album Konk is fantastic, a great follow up to their excellent debut album Inside In/Inside Out. Their music is very breezy, poppy and happy. Admittedly, there’s some cringe-worthy songwriting in there (”A B C D E F and G, That reminds me at when we were free”) but it’s really a very enjoyable album. Great quality all round, with “Sway” being one of the stand out tracks.

Robert Downey Jr does a great job as Iron Man
Iron Man’s a great comic book adaptation but whatever you do, don’t leave until the credits are over — there’s a real nice extra scene.
