Welcome to random notes, a semi-regular, almost-daily and completely platitudinous collection of text, pixels, links and other finds from the web

What a fantastic CG video! You have to watch it even if you’re not an F1 fan. (I wonder whether it was done by the same people who did the Red Bull F1 Singapore video.)

Renderings of the Abarth Coupe make it look like a mean, mean racing rascal

The Abarth Coupe is slated to come out in 2010 and it’s a sports coupe based on the body of the Fiat 500. With Abarth at the controls and under the hood, this two-seater Coupe promises to be a small, fast and fuel efficient car which even BMX scallywags might call ‘a proper car’.

A team from a non-profit design group poring over a 1986 Toyota 4Runner to use in building an incubator [Image from the International Herald Tribune]

An excellent read on the IHT about how an incubator for newborns was built out of new or used car parts for use in developing countries.

Leaked pictures of the Aston Martin One-77
Aston Martin is building a brand new, super-exclusive coupe codenamed One-77. There are a number of ‘leaked’ renderings of the car flying around and it looks bloody sweet. Well, it better look sweet because it is reportedly going to sell for about £1.2M when its launched. They are also only going to build about 70 odd units of this car, which is a smart move because the number of affluent investment bankers still in a job has significantly dwindled in recent months

Ferrari bicycle with training wheels
A training bike from Ferrari … sounds wimpy, doesn’t it? Even a nicely built soapbox car would have been cooler. Anyway, this is the closest Ferrari will ever come to having a green vehicle.

The Knight Rider R/C car, from Firebox
I sure hope the Firebox.com site accepts international credit cards (update: oh baby, yes they do!) because I am so going to order the remote control K.I.T.T. car as soon as I can. It talks and has that snazzy, retro, swooshing red sensor light in front!

Speaking of Knight Rider, I wonder if they’ll show the NBC Knight Rider TV movie here in Singapore…

The Swiss-made sQuba is the world’s first real submersible car that is good on the roads, good underwater and good for the environment
Remember James Bond’s Lotus Esprit which could travel underwater back in 1977? Well, the real deal is at hand with the Swiss made Rinspeed sQuba. The all-electric convertible sports car is going to be launched at next month’s Geneva Motor Show, where we may find out if scuba gear comes standard with the car.

(I also have other questions like if the car would have airbags or waterbags, and if the engine can ever get flooded – I guess we’ll have to wait and see.)

The Fisker Karma is one of the few environmentally friendly sports car
The Fisker Karma was unveiled at the Detroit motorshow about a month ago. This car can run on just pure electricity, which can last for about 80 kilometres, or in the four-cylinder engine sports mode, which can go from 0 to 100km/h in about 6 seconds. Designed and built by Henrik Fisker, designer of the awesome Aston Martin DB9, this is one car which is good to look at and good for the environment too.

Tata Nano (1 lakh, US$ 2,500)unveiled at the New Delhi Auto Expo today, boasting a 30-horsepower 624-cc engine; a four-speed manual transmission; a disc/drum brake setup; room for five, claimed fuel economy of 54 US miles per gallon, no power steering, only a fuel gauge, speedometer, oil light and car meets safety and environmental standards.

More power to the people, of course, but the people better be prepared for higher fuel costs, more pollution and more congestion.

(That is indeed a bit rich coming from someone who owns a car.)

Hello

Most folks who visit random notes seem to hang around for about 9.032 minutes on average.

My name is and I just learned that the hash sign is also known as an octothorp. It's exactly this kind of unnecessary information works its way into conversations that scares people away from me. Not that I am really complaining though…
