MS-DOS t-shirt by Microsoft, designed by hip-hop artist Common

This might sound totally weird, but Microsoft just released an exciting line of graphic t-shirts. The designs are a little on the pretentiously hip and retro side, but I have to say some of the t-shirts look pretty sweet. This is gear from Microsoft I would readily buy. Heck, I’m already looking forward to upgrades.

A picture of what is Queen Elizabeth Walk in Singapore when it was still a bustling, disorganized port of call (Taken in July 1970 by Carl Mydans for LIFE)

Millions of photos from LIFE magazine are now archived on Google Images. And the large-resolution versions are available for purchase as prints, too. I found a slew of Singapore-related images and they are awesome (if you’re a nostalgia/history buff) but I just wish there were more information on the images’ locations and context. Maybe Google and LIFE could extend the Google Image Labeler to this outstanding resource one day and make it even more useful.

A 1930s Jaeger LeCoultre Compass 35mm camera
One of the more technically advanced gadgets in its day almost 70 years ago, the Jaeger LeCoultre Compass looks as like a very, very polished piece of workmanship. It cost about £40 pounds in 1937 but today, this timeless beauty can fetch about US$2,000.

Cover art of Modern Guilt

With almost all of Beck’s albums, I have always needed many listens before coming to a decision on whether I like it or not. His 2008 album, Modern Guilt, however took me just one listen to immediately like it. It sounds darkly catchy and much more consistent than the 2006 LP The Information. The Modern Guilt has a ‘vintage’ sound throughout the album and Gamma Ray is a standout track for me, despite lyrics informing us of the state of our ecosystem (”If I could hold hold out for now/ With these icecaps melting down”).

It’s a little introspective, even sad, at times but the album holds together pretty well even on a gloomy, rainy day because thankfully, you cannot always make out what Beck is rambling on about half the time.
