The Church of the SubGenius is a fake, satirical ‘religion’. Actually, it may be better to describe it as a well-crafted post-modern mockery of organized religion and cults. They were founded by J. R. “Bob” Dobbs in the 1950s and even have a Book of The SubGenius.
The Book of The SubGenius describes the church’s philosophy as follows: “The Church Of The SubGenius is an order of Scoffers and Blasphemers, dedicated to Total Slack, delving into Mockery Science, Sadofuturistics, Megaphysics, Scatalography, Schizophreniatrics, Morealism, Sarcastrophy, Cynisacreligion, Apocolyptionomy, ESPectorationalism, Hypno-Pediatrics, Subliminalism, Satyriology, Disto-Utopianity, Sardonicology, Fascetiouism, Ridiculophagy, and Miscellatheistic Theology.”
I think we’ll be hard-pressed to find a joke any more elaborate and fully fleshed-out than this.
