An ugly paradox of the 21st century is that some of our elegant symbols of modernity— smartphones, laptops and digital cameras —are built from minerals that seem to be fueling mass slaughter and rape in Congo.

It’s been a wild ride through 2008 and the new year looks like it’s gonna drag our wallets through the mud. Having said that, there are people on the other side of the world who are going through shit that makes you want to throw up.

Yeah, belated happy new year to you, too.

Nice typographic/infographic video from Athletics and Good Magazine, but honestly, it’s not the most ground breaking motion graphics we have seen, is it?

Looks like the browser wars are upon us again. With the introduction of Google’s Chrome browser to the party, I cannot wait to see how the loyalty of Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari and Opera users will be tested (and I include myself in there). The IHT has a good write-up on how Google doesn’t actually have to win this browser war to cause Microsoft to wobble.

A weird comic book by Google explaining Google Chrome

And yeah, I am convinced Chrome is going to be the killer app for Android. In fact, since it’s WebKit powered, it could be ported to the iPhone someday, somehow.

Flyboys (2006), starring James Franco as Blaine Rawlings, Martin Henderson, Jean Reno and Jennifer DeckerSpending all day at home on a work day recovering from bacterial tonsillitis is not really that much fun because the medication makes you all woozy and daytime TV makes you want to throw up. And yet somehow, I ended up watching the rather entertaining Flyboys from start to finish on HBO.

The story is revolves around the enlistment, training and aerial fighting of the volunteer American pilots who served in the Lafayette Escadrille during World War I. The movie is a little long and the effects are not the best but the aerial combat scenes are great. This flick would make a good addition to any war movie buff’s DVD collection.

A humourous, if not apt, depiction of the current state of US economics and policy
